Eight Archbishop Lanfranc athletes turned out in their club colours for the first big athletics meeting of the season, The Surrey County Open Championships.
Archbishop Lanfranc athletes secured 5 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals, a total that most clubs would be proud of.
Taiwo Kamoju (Croydon Harriers), a first year Under 15, reached the final of both the 100m and 200m. He finished a creditable 5th in both races.
The Obi-Adewole family literally had a field day. The youngest boy Simi won gold in both the shot putt and the discus. His bigger sister, Yani won gold in the shot and a bronze in the discus. Big sister Chioma won a silver in the hammer and a bronze in the shot. But big brother, Afam stole the limelight on day 1 with a magnificent personal best of 22.86s to win the Under 17 Men’s 200m. All competed in South London Harriers colours.
Also representing South London, Shanice Harrison won an unexpected silver medal in the Under 17 100m, against older runners. She also gained a personal best in Day 2 over 200m of 25.91.
However the highlight of day 2 was a superb Under 17 Men’s 100m race, the last race of the day. Four of the fastest boys in the country lined up for the final. Cameron Smith (Croydon Harriers) probably began as 4th favourite but he overcame a stumble at the start to knock more than 2/10ths of a second off his previous best to win in a stunning 10.97secs. The second fastest time in the UK.
