The weekend of April 24th – 26th will be the culmination of years of hard work and training for The Archbishop Lanfranc U16 basketball team.
On Friday 24th April they travel to Nottingham to compete in the National U16 Basketball “Final Fours” where they will play Roundhay School from Yorkshire on Saturday 25th in the semi-final. If successful they will meet the winners of Bromsgrove (Birmingham) and Harberdashers’ Aske’s from London. They return to play Cobham on Sunday in the final of the Surrey clubs U16 championships. This is a particularly noteworthy effort from the whole team as we are a school team in a clubs competition and we are only allowed to play two of our five national league players per match.
In the national quarterfinal the team played probably the best basketball seen in the Archbishop Lanfranc sports hall as they dominated Stenying Grammar School in an emphatic 114-59 victory. Ali Mahmood and Nathan Nicholas led the scorers with 29 each whilst Matthew Don and Peter Osei-Bonsu had 14 and 8 rebounds and Matthew Waldron stole the ball 10 times from the opposition. Campbell McGuire weighed in with 22 points as Raymond Amoah contributed with some outstanding defence. Overall a great team performance.
