The year 9 girls’ basketball team travelled to Woking to take on Winston Churchill School in the Surrey Cup semi-finals.

The girls started off slowly missing easy shots in the early part of the contest. However in the second half the team were more composed and their shots began to fall. Hayley Tanner led the team in the early going as she put in 8 unanswered points. By the end of the first half of play Lanfranc had a comfortable 12 point lead over their hosts.

However in the 3rd quarter Winston Churchill cut into the lead, but key baskets from Shanice Kpobie-Charles, Shantelle Roberts and Georgina Giles kept their opponents at arm’s length and extended the lead to 12 points again.

In the closing five minutes of the final period, Winston Churchill staged their last effort as they once again cut into the deficit. Now only trailing by five points, with 45 seconds remaining on the clock, the game quickly became a desperate situation for our year 9 girls as they struggled to take control. A solid defensive stand by Nia Holland was enough to prevent their best player from getting to the basket.  As the final seconds ticked off the clock and the buzzer sounded, Lanfranc managed to squeeze out a slender 38-33 point victory. They will now meet Woking High School in the Surrey Cup Final which is due to be played after the Easter break.
