Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We provide activities and opportunities for children to promote and develop social and communication skills eg. having name cards displayed for turns on computer encouraging turn taking and name recognition, sharing games, and circle time to encourage listening and empathy with others.  For younger children we provide a secure, warm and caring environment to promote attachments.

Communication, Language and Literacy

We demonstrate reading and writing skills, using various mediums.  Our environment incorporates a variety of signs, symbols, numbers and music as well as language and cultural diversity.  We provide and support development of ICT resources including computers, CD player, TV, radio and interactive toys alongside the more traditional nursery opportunities introducing a range of fiction/non fiction books, songs, poetry and stories.

 Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy

We use indoor and outdoor areas to encourage children’s understanding of numbers, counting and calculating.  We provide resources including rulers, tape measures and calculators which can be transported in trays to the outside environment.  Water and sand play is enhanced by the use of different tools to encourage children in experimenting with volume, full, empty, light, floating, sinking etc.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

We provide opportunities to visit outside facilities:  The children regularly visit the library, memorial gardens, local shops, IKEA as well as Central Croydon.  These outings involve the use of bus, trams, trains and walking giving children a valuable opportunity to experience the world outside of nursery.  Past activities have included setting the role play area up as greengrocers, travel agents, post offices and restaurants.

Physical Development

We develop children’s confidence and self-esteem to help encourage them to take challenges and risks in their play.  We motivate and encourage children to be more active and to develop movement skills through praise, games and role modelling.  Our outdoor area is spacious, incorporating both soft and hard landscaping and we are developing areas such as wildlife, vegetable garden in order to complement our open space.  This flexibility allows us to meet the needs of all children including special educational needs.

Creative Development

We ensure children feel secure enough to try new experiences and encourage them to use their imagination and creativity by providing a stimulating environment including offering resources from a variety of cultures to stimulate new ideas.  We encourage children with communication difficulties to respond to music in different ways using musical instruments, clapping and dancing.
