For the second year running, the Maths department at Lanfranc have worked with some gifted Year 5 boys from Winterbourne Junior Boys’ School, in a series of maths master classes. The mathematicians attended the classes for 5 weeks during the summer term of 2012. Each class focused on a different aspect including:

  • Investigating jumping frogs to form quadratic equations
  • Discovering angle facts and reasoning
  • Unfolding a murder mystery surrounding negative numbers
  • Identifying which pupil had the facial proportions of a Greek God using and unitary ratios and the Golden ratio
  • A Mathematical treasure hunt

When asked how they found their time at Lanfranc, one pupil said...

‘...These subjects really helped. I will never forget these lessons and I will never forget Lanfranc’.

The pupils were: Micheal Shampande; Kirthihan Vijayakumar; Stephen Eyeta; Ivon Bossawla; Lushmen Rajivan; Bavethan Sivanesasunthar; Yusuf Desai; Joseph Smith; Faris Malik; Yonattan Woldermariam

The Royal Institution of Mathematics and Engineering run master classes that are hands-on and interactive extracurricular sessions led by top experts from academia and industry for keen and talented young people all around the UK. They are designed to encourage, inspire and engage young people in the art and practice of mathematics by introducing students to aspects or applications of maths which may not usually be covered in the school curriculum. Topics range from art to cryptography, dinosaurs, mazes and paper folding.

Students are selected on the basis of teacher recommendation and the RI is looking for not just an aptitude in mathematics, but also a keenness and determination to explore. During the summer term, the Royal Institute invites all of that year's participants to a special follow-up master class event.

One of our students, Mohsin Bukhari, now in year 11, attended a series of classes at Wilsons in year 9, and was selected to attend one of these extra master classes later in year 10. Read Mohsins blog to find out what he got up to there...
