Refugee Week is celebrated every year in June to highlight the positive contribution that refugees have made to our country and to raise awareness about what it really means to be a refugee or asylum seeker. As part of this year’s celebrations schools across the borough were invited to participate in a poetry competition organised by Croydon’s Refugee Advisory Team.

During their English lessons pupils in years 8 and 10 wrote excellent poems which showed their understanding and empathy with refugees and asylum seekers. Shanice Harrison’s poem called “If Only” won 2nd prize.  She received a certificate and prize from the Mayor of Croydon as part of Croydon’s Refugee Week celebrations. Well done Shanice!

If Only

As I walked through the city
Watching the people go by
All I could wonder was
What would it be like back home?
Would it be sunny?
Would the people I loved have changed?
How I wish I could go back home
If only……….

As I walked through the city
Watching the people go by
All I could wonder was
What was for tea?
Would mum be making fish and chips?
Or maybe even ordering out
How I wished Arsenal would win the cup today
How I wished there would be a snowy day
If only………

Her charm threw me off guard
Her beauty was so remarkable
If she had never left her country
We would not be here saying the wedding vows
If only ……………
