In 2005 the DfES published design guidance for schools on the development of sport and PE spaces - this can be dowloaded in four parts by following the links below:

partnershipsforschools.org.uk/documents/Design/PESportSpacespart2.pdf
partnershipsforschools.org.uk/documents/Design/PESportSpacespart3.pdf

Partnerships for schools have a number of resources for schools including a collection of video case studies that can be accessed here: partnershipsforschools.org.uk/library/PE_dvd1.jsp

Attached are a number of publications that will also be useful in the context of BSF. Designing for Sport on School Sites is a good introduction to considering large scale investment in sport facilities and Active Design covers sport and PE design in its widest sense, including facilities beyond school.

Many thanks to Angie Preston (LeAd at Archbishop Tenison's) for the attached article by Mark Preston, 'Transformation or Modernisation in PE' and if you would like to see a very innovative use of recycled material in school sports hall design then follow this link: containercity.com/Dunraven-Sports-Hall.html
